Over 100 cases of a new type of coronavirus detected in Russia

114 cases of new coronavirus variant XFG detected in Russia

Rospotrebnadzor has recorded the spread of a new coronavirus strain in the country. As reported by Russian media citing the agency, more than half of all detected cases (54%) are concentrated in the capital. Despite the active spread, specialists assess the level of threat to public health as low.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, the XFG strain differs from previous virus variants by its mild course of disease. A characteristic symptom of the new COVID-19 variant is hoarseness of voice. At the same time, the virus demonstrates a high degree of contagiousness, which contributes to its rapid spread.

The new coronavirus variant was first detected on January 27, 2025 in Canada. The World Health Organization has already responded to the emergence of XFG, including it in June in the list of "variants under monitoring".
