New species of dangerous tick discovered in Turkey. It can transmit over 30 pathogens.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to NTV channel, a potentially deadly tick Haemaphysalis longicornis, presumably of East Asian origin, has been detected in Turkey. This parasite is notoriously known for its ability to transmit dangerous diseases affecting livestock. Biology professor from Tokat University, Adem Keskin, warns that this species poses a serious threat to humans as well.
According to the scientist, this 56th species of tick in Turkey was first discovered last year when a resident of Istanbul delivered the parasite to a medical facility. "Research conducted since September 2024 has shown that the tick entered Turkey three to four years ago," noted Professor Keskin.
Earlier, local media reported alarming statistics: at least seven people have fallen victim to tick bites in Turkey this year. The first cases of parasite attacks were recorded back in April.
