Mysterious gray spheres discovered on New South Wales beaches

"Officials are warning residents not to touch the mysterious spherical balls and to avoid beaches where they appear," The Guardian reports in its coverage of the unusual find on the Australian coast.

Despite thorough cleaning of the beaches by special services, experts still cannot establish a connection between these mysterious objects and similar substance that was discovered on Sydney's shore earlier this year.

The state's Environmental Protection Authority analyzed the mysterious spheres and found E. coli bacteria, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons in their composition. Of particular interest was the presence of particles of porous volcanic glass in some samples.

According to one theory, the appearance of the balls may be related to a malfunction in the region's sewage system. It's worth noting that Sydney's wastewater undergoes only basic "primary" treatment before being discharged into the ocean through "deep-water" outfalls located 2-4 km from the shore.

The scientific community continues intensive study of this unusual phenomenon, trying to solve the mystery of the strange spheres' origin.
