Famous American race car driver Robbie Brewer tragically died during a competition on a track in North Carolina, reports CBS Sports.

The fatal race took place on August 9 at the famous "Bowman Gray Stadium" track in Winston-Salem, where short track races were held in the Sportsman division. Four laps before the finish, during the race restart, the 53-year-old athlete lost control on a turn, and his car crashed into a barrier at high speed. According to available information, the cause of the accident was a heart attack that the driver suffered while behind the wheel.

Brewer was immediately extracted from the wrecked car and taken to the hospital, however, despite the efforts of medical professionals, they were unable to save his life. The driver's family officially confirmed the information about his death on August 10.
