Death from pneumonic plague recorded in the US

In Arizona, a fatal case of pneumonic plague has been recorded for the first time in 17 years

"The Coconino County Health and Human Services Department received laboratory confirmation on July 11, 2025, of the death of a local resident from pneumonic plague - a dangerous lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis (plague bacillus)," according to an official statement from the department, published on their Facebook page (banned in Russia; belongs to Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia).

As the authorities emphasize, this is the first death from this disease in the county since 2007. Details about the identity of the deceased patient are not being disclosed.

Pneumonic plague is considered the most dangerous and rare form of this ancient disease, characterized by severe damage to the respiratory system.
