OpenAI implements parental controls for ChatGPT after tragic incident with a teenager
OpenAI, the creator of the popular neural network ChatGPT, has announced the launch of new parental control features for its chatbot. The decision was made against the backdrop of serious allegations regarding artificial intelligence's involvement in the suicide of a 16-year-old teenager in the United States.
According to the developers' statement, the updated settings will provide parents with expanded access to information about their children's use of ChatGPT. Additionally, OpenAI plans to implement the ability to add a trusted contact for emergency communication, which will provide users with a direct channel to seek help in critical situations.
An important innovation will be a quick emergency services call button. The company acknowledged that despite built-in algorithms designed to discourage users from dangerous actions, during prolonged dialogues, the neural network's responses may become inappropriate.
As a reminder, the parents of the 16-year-old teenager who committed suicide have initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. They accuse ChatGPT of being complicit in their son's tragedy. The 40-page lawsuit claims that the chatbot did not terminate the conversation with the teenager or activate an "emergency protocol," even though the young man was sharing suicidal thoughts with it.
