Sensational discovery in Jerusalem: archaeologists uncover ancient coin from the time of the Second Temple destruction
Archaeologists have made an amazing discovery in Jerusalem - a bronze coin about 2000 years old, minted in the last months before the destruction of the Second Temple - a historical event that, according to the Bible, was predicted by Jesus Christ, reports Daily Mail.
The unique artifact dates back to 69-70 CE and belongs to the fourth year of the Great Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire. This large-scale conflict, also known as the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE), erupted against a backdrop of growing religious tensions, unbearable tax burden, and harsh political oppression.
Notably, the coin was made by Jewish rebels during a dramatic period when Jerusalem was already under tight siege by Roman troops. The front side of the artifact skillfully depicts a cup with an inscription in ancient Hebrew. The reverse side is adorned with a palm branch and two etrogs - important ritual symbols of the Sukkot festival, dedicated to the forty-year wandering of the Israelites through the desert after the Exodus from Egypt.
The destruction of the Second Temple occurred in 70 CE, when Roman legions finally suppressed the uprising, destroying the main religious center and symbol of Jewish independence. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus foretold that "not one stone here will be left on another" - a prophecy traditionally interpreted as predicting precisely this historical catastrophe.
The valuable coin was discovered in close proximity to the southwestern corner of the Temple Mount. Specialists note the exceptional preservation of the find.
"This is a bronze coin with clear inscriptions and symbols. Such findings allow us to literally touch the last days of the Second Temple and the lives of people who found themselves at the center of the greatest tragedy of their era," the archaeologists' statement says.
