Sensational discovery: archaeologists revealed the secret of the "Land of the White Jaguar" - the last refuge of the Maya civilization
An archaeological expedition made a historic discovery in the jungles of Mexican Campeche, finding the legendary fortress of Sak-Bahlan, known as the "Land of the White Jaguar." According to information published on the official portal of the Mexican government, the ruins found represent the last stronghold of the once-powerful Maya civilization.
The history of searching for this mysterious place spans decades. Back in 1999, Dutch researcher Jan de Vos attempted to discover the ancient fortress in the impenetrable jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula using advanced technologies, but his expedition was unsuccessful. Only 25 years later, an international team of scientists from the USA, Japan, and Mexico was able to continue his work. A key role in the expedition's success was played by Josue Losada-Toledo from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, who developed four potential routes taking into account landscape features, water source locations, vegetation characteristics, and the physical capabilities of ancient builders.
The breakthrough came thanks to aerial photography, which revealed an area fully corresponding to historical descriptions of the lost Maya city. According to Luke Olda-Thomas, the head of archaeological work from Northern Arizona University, the expedition discovered an impressive complex of nearly 6,700 ancient structures, hidden for centuries under a dense cover of tropical vines in the vicinity of Campeche.
