Apple is considering releasing a bumper for the upcoming ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. The company believes that owners won't want to hide the main advantage of the device under a regular case, so a bumper could be the perfect solution for such users, reports MacRumors.
According to Gurman, the new accessory will resemble the case that Apple introduced for the iPhone 4 in 2010. The design provides protection only for the side edges of the smartphone, leaving the back panel completely exposed. The original bumpers for iPhone 4 were made of rubber. This solution will provide basic protection against falls and damage, while barely increasing the dimensions of the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.
Interestingly, the bumper case for iPhone 4 was distributed free of charge to customers at the time due to the notorious Antennagate problem, when a certain way of holding the device that covered the antenna bands led to a significant deterioration in cellular signal quality.
According to other insider information, Apple is also developing a case with a built-in battery for the iPhone 17 Air. This accessory will significantly increase the smartphone's operating time without recharging. Recall that the last full-fledged battery cases were released by the company for the iPhone 11 lineup, after which it switched to removable MagSafe Battery Packs starting with iPhone 12.
Apple is expected to present the entire iPhone 17 lineup along with new accessories in September this year.
