Holiday risk: cardiologist reveals main causes of heart attacks during New Year days. Expert from the American Heart Association Michael Tanue warns about the dangers hidden in holiday feasts and related habits. Medical Xpress publishes recommendations for maintaining health during winter celebrations.
"A study published in the British Medical Journal showed that during the winter holidays, the number of heart attacks increases by 15%. The peak occurs at 10 PM," warned the cardiologist.
According to the doctor, one of the main reasons for the increase in heart attacks during the holidays is ignoring alarming symptoms. People postpone seeking medical help, not wanting to "spoil" weekends or family gatherings, although timely assistance can save lives.
Tanue identified severe stress as one of the main risk factors. Holidays are often accompanied by emotional tension, financial worries, tiresome trips, and family conflicts. Such changes increase the load on the cardiovascular system.
"The risk of heart attack is also increased by overeating and alcohol abuse. During holiday feasts, people more often consume fatty and salty foods and drink more than usual, which can lead to pressure spikes and deterioration of heart function," noted the doctor.
In addition, the expert drew attention to decreased physical activity and skipping prescribed medications. In the holiday hustle, many people move less and forget to take their medications on time, which is especially dangerous for people with chronic heart diseases and diabetes.
Tanue emphasized that seeking medical help at the first signs of a heart attack or stroke is one of the best gifts a person can give to themselves and their loved ones.
