Revolutionary Discovery: Dietary Fiber Activates the Body's Fight Against Melanoma
According to TUT.AZ, scientists from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity have made a breakthrough in understanding the connection between diet and the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy. The research, published in the prestigious scientific journal Immunity, demonstrates that fiber significantly enhances the function of T-lymphocytes – crucial immune system cells responsible for destroying dangerous viruses, bacteria, and malignant cells.
The discovery was made during observations of a group of melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy. Scientists found that patients whose diets are rich in fiber have special bacteria in their intestines. These microorganisms, by processing dietary fiber, produce short-chain fatty acids – valuable metabolites that serve as fuel for immune cells and substantially increase their ability to detect and destroy cancer cells. Microbiome analysis confirmed: patients with better response to immunotherapy had higher levels of these beneficial substances.
The researchers emphasize that the results clearly demonstrate the importance of a balanced diet and open prospects for developing new personalized approaches in cancer treatment. Scientists remind that rich sources of fiber include legumes, various grains, nuts, fresh vegetables, and whole grain bread.
