World clocks may "lose" a second: scientists are ready to adjust time
A sensational statement was made by the Director General of VNIIFTRI Sergey Donchenko in a conversation with RIA Novosti: specialists are ready to conduct a unique operation to subtract one second from world time.
The reason for discussing such an unusual measure was the observation of the institute's leading researcher Vitaly Palchikov, who noted a significant acceleration in our planet's rotation in recent years. According to scientists' calculations, by 2029, there may be a need to adjust world time by one second.
As Donchenko assured, technically such an operation will not cause difficulties - similar time manipulations have already become a routine procedure. The institute's head explained that our planet goes through natural cycles of slowing down and acceleration, and we are currently observing an acceleration phase. Among the possible causes of this phenomenon, experts cite global warming, melting glaciers, and subsequent redistribution of water masses.
According to Donchenko, there is currently active warming of the planet, accompanied by intense internal processes. However, the scientist hastens to reassure: these phenomena are unlikely to be related to industrial emissions and do not portend global catastrophes.
