Scientists sound the alarm: glacier on remote Heard Island is rapidly disappearing

Researchers anxiously report a catastrophic loss of a quarter of the glacier volume on Heard Island, lost in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean southwest of Australia. This is reported by The Guardian.

According to scientific data, over seven decades of observations, the island's ice sheet has lost a colossal 25% of its mass. The statistics are relentless: from 1947 to 2019, the temperature on the island rose by 0.7°C, and the ice cover decreased from 289 to 225 square kilometers. A particularly dramatic situation is observed on the Stephenson Glacier, where melting is occurring most intensively.

On the neighboring Lawrence Peninsula, the situation is even more critical - the area of glaciers has decreased almost fivefold: from 10.5 to just 2.2 square kilometers. Scientists insist that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is becoming vital for preserving the unique ecosystems of these territories, where numerous colonies of penguins live.
