Scientists found a substance in sea buckthorn leaves that suppresses cancer

Russian scientists have discovered a natural compound in sea buckthorn leaves capable of suppressing cancer cells. The compound in question is called casuarictin, whose anti-tumor potential has been confirmed under laboratory conditions. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

Specialists from the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (VILAR) conducted a series of experiments, testing casuarictin on a standard cervical cancer cell model. The results proved promising: the metabolic activity of cancer cells decreased notably — with the effect directly depending on the concentration of the substance and the duration of its exposure.

As noted by senior researcher at VILAR Elena Zhnichkova, the obtained data provide grounds for considering casuarictin as a promising compound deserving of in-depth study.

However, practical application is still a long way off — the research is at the laboratory stage. The scientists have extensive work ahead: it is necessary to evaluate the cytotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and bioavailability of casuarictin before its actual pharmaceutical potential can be discussed.
