Brazilian scientists made a breakthrough: bergamot extract restores liver function in obesity. Innovative research, published in the prestigious journal Food Research International, opens new possibilities in the fight against metabolic disorders.

As part of a large-scale experiment, specialists from the University of São Paulo and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul applied bergamot leaf extract (Citrus bergamia) to laboratory rats with artificially induced obesity. The results exceeded the scientists' expectations: after several weeks of taking the extract, the animals showed significantly improved lipid metabolism indicators. There was a noticeable decrease in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while the concentration of beneficial HDL cholesterol increased. Particularly impressive was the reduction in weight and total fat mass in the rodents.

Detailed biochemical analysis revealed powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of bergamot. The extract effectively suppresses the formation of dangerous reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines in liver cells. This protects the organ from developing metabolically associated fatty liver disease – a serious complication that often accompanies obesity.

The research group believes that bergamot leaf extract could become a valuable natural remedy in the prevention of metabolic disorders. In the next stage, scientists plan to move on to clinical trials involving humans to determine effective dosages and confirm the safety of the preparation with long-term use.
