Astronomers consider nuclear option to protect Earth from potentially dangerous asteroid

As reported by Baku.ws" target="_blank">Baku.ws with reference to RIA Novosti, renowned British astronomer and science journalist David Whitehouse made a resonant statement on Sky News about possible methods of protection from asteroid 2024 YR4.

According to NASA's data from February 8, the probability of collision between the recently discovered space object and our planet in 2032 has reached an alarming 2.3%. Asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently the only known celestial body with a collision probability exceeding 1%. Specialists estimate its size to be approximately 90 meters in diameter. To clarify the object's parameters, NASA plans to conduct detailed observations using the James Webb Space Telescope in March 2025.

"We might need to consider radical measures, including the use of nuclear weapons to alter this asteroid's trajectory," Whitehouse stated on the channel.

The scientist noted that action needs to be taken by 2028, when the asteroid makes its next close approach to Earth.

According to space specialist Kate Arkless Gray, a 90-meter asteroid collision could cause catastrophic destruction on the scale of a major city.

Against the background of growing concerns, the Chinese Defense Science Administration has begun recruiting planetary defense specialists.

Russian astronomer Stas Korotky, scientific director of the Ka-Dar Observatory and "Astroverts" astrofarm, confirmed in a conversation with RIA Novosti that the probability of the asteroid colliding with Earth in 2032 is estimated to be between 0.5 and 6%.
