Cardiologist revealed who is in the high-risk group for sudden cardiac arrest
As reported by TUT.AZ, cardiologist Ekaterina Paukova, in a conversation with "Lenta.ru", detailed the risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest.
The specialist explained that this dangerous condition occurs due to serious heart rhythm disturbances - ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. In such cases, the heart muscle begins to contract too frequently, losing its ability to effectively pump blood throughout the body.
"Men face a higher risk of cardiac arrest than women. One of the reasons is their hormonal background - the male body produces significantly less estrogen than the female body. This hormone and its derivatives protect the heart and blood vessels from developing diseases," Paukova explained.
The cardiologist also noted that high cholesterol levels, smoking, and alcohol abuse significantly increase the probability of cardiac arrest - factors that statistically are more common in men.
In men under 40, sudden cardiac arrest is usually associated with arrhythmias, while in older patients it is linked to unrecognized coronary heart disease. In this condition, atherosclerotic plaques form inside the blood vessels, and if such a plaque ruptures, blood flow is disrupted, leading to myocardial infarction, which can result in instant cardiac arrest.
For timely detection of cardiovascular diseases, the doctor recommended regular electrocardiograms, monitoring cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and checking lipoprotein (a) levels at least once. From the age of 18, it is necessary to measure blood pressure at least once a year. If readings exceed 135/85 mm Hg, one should immediately consult a cardiologist for additional examination.
