Alarming signal: fatigue and bloating may indicate serious liver problems. Leading gastroenterologist Edgmar Parra from the University of Antioquia revealed in an interview with Vanitatis non-obvious signs of malfunction of this vital organ.
The liver is a true workhorse of our body, performing more than 500 vital functions. This amazing organ not only filters blood but also synthesizes proteins, processes cholesterol, and performs many other tasks. However, constant overloads caused by harmful habits, infections, or metabolic disorders can lead to the destruction of liver tissue. The result is fibrosis, which over time progresses to cirrhosis – a chronic and often irreversible condition.
The main culprits in the development of cirrhosis are viral hepatitis B and C, excessive alcohol consumption, fatty liver disease, as well as various genetic and autoimmune disorders.
The classic signs of liver problems are considered to be yellowing of the skin and eye whites, darkening of urine, and discoloration of stool. However, Dr. Parra draws attention to less obvious but no less alarming symptoms – chronic fatigue and abdominal bloating. The latter may be a manifestation of ascites – a dangerous accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, characteristic of liver cirrhosis.
The specialist particularly emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis of liver disorders. He strongly recommends not delaying a visit to the doctor when the first alarming symptoms appear, especially for people in risk groups: those suffering from chronic diseases, those who have had viral infections, or those with alcohol problems.
