Morning ritual with lemon water: who should be more careful
As reported by TUT.AZ, the popular morning habit of drinking water with lemon may not be as harmless for some people, warns gastroenterologist Alexandra Kovaleva in an interview with "Gazeta.Ru".
"Consuming lemon water and ginger in small amounts will not harm a healthy person, as the pH of gastric juice is more acidic than the pH of lemon water, and drinking water with lemon cannot cause significant irritation to the stomach walls and lead to the development of gastritis or ulcers. However, there are exceptions," the expert emphasized.
According to the specialist, patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease may experience increased heartburn and burning after consuming acidic liquid.
"People who have erosions and ulcers of the gastric mucosa may also notice increased abdominal pain when consuming it due to mechanical irritation of the ulcer surface by acidic liquid. In addition, patients with impaired gastric motility (people with diabetes, patients receiving semaglutide therapy, elderly individuals) may experience heaviness in the abdomen, nausea, and urges to vomit due to the sudden consumption of large amounts of liquid on an empty stomach," the doctor noted.
Medical professionals advise reducing the risk of unpleasant consequences by making the drink less concentrated (no more than half a lemon per glass of water), consuming it warm, and drinking slowly, in small sips, avoiding rapid consumption.
