New breakthrough in liver cancer treatment: surgical intervention after immunotherapy significantly increases patients' life expectancy

As reported by TUT.AZ, a revolutionary study published in the prestigious journal Liver Cancer opens new perspectives for patients with advanced forms of liver cancer.

Scientists from Cedars-Sinai Cancer analyzed data from more than 4.3 thousand patients and came to an impressive conclusion: if patients undergo liver transplantation or tumor removal after a course of immunotherapy, their chances of survival dramatically increase. Although immunotherapy helps reduce the tumor, it rarely provides a complete cure. However, when the reduced tumor makes surgical intervention possible, the risk of death decreases by an impressive 85% compared to patients receiving only immunotherapy.

Despite such encouraging results, the study revealed a disturbing fact: only about 3% of patients after immunotherapy are referred for subsequent operations, primarily in large academic medical centers. Dr. Ju Dong Yang, the lead author of the study, notes that this is a missed opportunity to save many lives. According to him, a significant number of patients die not from the cancer itself, but from accompanying liver diseases, which can be effectively eliminated through transplantation.
