British doctor warns: hot showers in winter can cause serious skin problems
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to the Daily Mirror, winter conditions create a double blow to the skin: cold air outside and dry air in heated rooms actively contribute to dehydration of the skin. British therapist Donald Grant emphasizes that skin diseases tend to worsen particularly during the cold season.
The specialist revealed the mechanism of the negative impact of a hot shower: despite the better cleansing effect, high water temperature destroys the skin's natural hydrolipid barrier. This protective layer performs critically important functions — it retains moisture and provides a barrier against bacteria and harmful environmental substances.
"To reduce the negative impact, it's worth avoiding cleansing products with aggressive chemical components and not overusing harsh washcloths and scrubs. It's better to use warm or slightly warm water - both when washing your face and when washing your hands," Grant noted.
In conclusion, the therapist reminded about the need to maintain water balance during the winter period. For those who don't enjoy drinking plain water, the expert recommended paying attention to herbal teas as an alternative source of hydration.
