Azerbaijani students in the USA prevented the screening of a film about the Karabakh conflict
As reported by TUT.AZ, master's students from Azerbaijan managed to achieve the cancellation of a screening of a film about the second Karabakh war, which was planned to be shown at the University of California, Berkeley. This was reported by Jeyhun Khalilov, a master's student at the law faculty of this university.
Here is his post:
"On April 24, the law faculty of the University of California, Berkeley planned to screen a film made by Armenians about the second Karabakh war, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the so-called "Armenian genocide". As soon as we saw this, on Monday, together with other master's students Ingilab Huseynzade and Murad Gurbanov, we went to the university's LLM Advising Office. We told them about the history of the conflict, the systematic massacres that the Azerbaijani people have been subjected to since 1905, the 4 UN resolutions, the Khojaly genocide, and, most importantly, about the ongoing peace negotiations. We drew their attention to the fact that this event directly accuses Azerbaijan of genocide. In addition, we noted that the use of the word arts**h in the event description directly contradicts our territorial sovereignty.
The next day, the head of the Advising Office personally received all three of us and held a lengthy discussion. He noted that even if the event is quite "offensive", poses a serious threat to people's health, even if everything said is a lie, according to the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution, no one has the right to cancel the event. In this case, we said that we want to open a stand about the pogroms against Azerbaijan, as well as about the attacks on Ganja and Barda during the 44-day Patriotic War.
Then we discussed this issue with the Deputy Director of the Human Rights Center, the organizer of the event. We expressed all our objections and protests. We noted that even the former chairman of the UN International Court of Justice, Judge Joan Donoghue, who teaches at the law faculty, notes that the conflict has already ended. And holding this event is only provocative in nature. It damages peace negotiations.
As a result, first the name of the fake entity, which has become a thing of the past, was removed. The Deputy Director stated that he would personally make a rebuttal before the start of the event, stating that this event has nothing to do with the anniversary of fictional events.
And today the event has already been canceled. They may show this film at another time in another place, and we may not have enough strength to prevent it. But today we were able to prevent it."
It is worth noting that all three students last year received full scholarships for the master's program in law at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley as part of the "State Program for Youth Education at Prestigious Foreign Higher Educational Institutions for 2022-2026".
