Trump lifts sanctions against Syria: "Giving a chance to achieve greatness"

US President Donald Trump made an unexpected announcement about lifting the sanctions regime against Syria. Speaking at an international forum in Saudi Arabia, the American leader announced his decision to "give a chance" to the Middle Eastern state, Reuters reports.

During his speech, Trump emphasized that the previous restrictive measures, which he characterized as "tough and paralyzing," had already fulfilled their assigned task.

"I will order the lifting of sanctions on Syria to give it an opportunity to achieve greatness. We are removing all of them. Good luck, Syria, show us something special," said the White House head, addressing the forum participants.

On May 13, Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia for his first state visit after taking office as president.

Prior to this, Axios reported on President Trump's intentions to sign a whole package of agreements during his visit to Arab countries, the total value of which could reach the astronomical sum of $1 trillion. According to the publication, the American leader plans to conclude contracts for arms supplies, as well as finalize deals in the energy sector and mineral extraction in Saudi Arabia.
