Real Madrid has issued an official statement about its participation in the final match of the Spanish Cup against Barcelona, which will take place on April 26, despite the escalating scandal with the referee team, reports TUT.AZ.
"Our team never considered the possibility of refusing to participate in tomorrow's final.
The club understands that the regrettable and inappropriate statements made by the referees appointed for this match, made 24 hours before the final, cannot overshadow a sporting event of global significance, which will be watched by hundreds of millions of people. [Real Madrid cannot refuse to participate in the match] out of respect for all fans who plan to come to Seville, and for all those who are already in the capital of Andalusia.
Real Madrid understands that football values must prevail, despite the hostility and animosity that today, once again against our club, has been shown by the referees appointed for the final," the club's statement says.
Tension reached its peak when, at the pre-match press conference, the main referee of the match, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea, could not hold back tears, commenting on criticism from Real Madrid's television: "When your child comes home in tears because at school his father was called a thief, it's very hard." Earlier, VAR referee Pablo González Fuertes threatened serious consequences for a critical video on the Madrid club's television, which listed referee Bengoechea's errors in favor of Real Madrid's opponents.
The Royal Club also appealed to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) demanding disciplinary proceedings against the referees and called on the head of the referee committee, Luis Medina Cantalejo, to publicly condemn the referees' statements.
Real Madrid is confident that the referees appointed for the match demonstrated "unpreparedness" for conducting the final and showed open "hostility" towards the club.
