Iran suspended production at the largest gas field after Israels strike

Iran forced to reduce gas production at its largest field after Israeli attack that caused fire and explosion at key infrastructure facilities.

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Reuters, an Israeli drone strike led to the shutdown of one of the four production units at the South Pars field - the world's largest gas field with proven reserves of a colossal 28 trillion cubic meters.

The strategically important South Pars provides about 70% of Iran's total gas production. Annually, the Islamic republic produces 250 billion cubic meters of gas, which accounts for 6% of global production, however, almost all of this volume is directed to meeting the country's domestic needs.

Strategic energy facilities were also hit by Israeli forces: the large "Shahran" oil depot in the vicinity of Tehran and one of the country's largest oil refineries "Shahr Rey", located in the Iranian capital, reports Aljazeera.

ING analysts note that the attack was deliberately focused on Iran's energy infrastructure oriented toward domestic consumption. In response to these actions, Iranian forces struck Israeli energy facilities, as indicated by Middle East Institute researcher Alex Vatanka: on Sunday, a rocket attack targeted an oil refinery and fuel depots in Haifa.
