Tragedy in the operating room: doctors in Colorado got carried away with a music game, failing to notice the patient's critical condition
A shocking incident occurred in a clinic in the American state of Colorado, where medical workers, engrossed in a music game during surgical intervention, did not notice the deterioration of the patient's vital signs. This is reported by HealthExec publication.
A 56-year-old man went to the medical facility for cataract removal surgery. The surgical procedure was performed by Dr. C. Stark Johnson with the participation of anesthesiologist Michael Urban.
During the operation, as was practiced before, Johnson turned on musical accompaniment. It was later revealed that the medical staff at that moment were engaged in playing musical bingo, trying to guess songs from the 1970s and 1980s.
At a certain point, the patient's health sharply deteriorated, but the doctors, engrossed in the game, did not react to the change in his condition. As a result, the man died right on the operating table.
The widow of the deceased initiated legal proceedings. Despite the fact that both specialists admitted to listening to music while working, only surgeon Johnson is named in the court case.
The operating surgeon himself claims that the anesthesiologist presumably turned off the monitoring that allowed them to control the patient's condition. His colleague Urban denies his guilt in the incident.
The final decision on the case has not been reported, as the parties reached an agreement in a pre-trial order.
