Global Threat: Beaches Around the World Are Disappearing Due to Catastrophic Sand Erosion

A disturbing trend has been documented by the authoritative Financial Times (FT) publication – the planet's beaches are rapidly shrinking due to large-scale coastal erosion. In the American town of Rodanthe (North Carolina), the consequences are already catastrophic – since 2020, 11 coastal homes have literally collapsed into the ocean. Restoration of the coastline is estimated at a colossal $40 million, which the small town simply doesn't have. The situation is equally dramatic in Barcelona, where about 30 thousand cubic meters of sand disappear irretrievably each year, threatening the existence of some beaches.

"From Miami to Barcelona and Australia's Gold Coast, authorities are trying to figure out how to save coastlines from erosion in the coming years. Some erosion occurs due to natural causes," the article states.

The authors emphasize that the situation is exacerbated by storms, strong tides, as well as rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming, which leads to glacier melting.

It is noted that sand is being imported to restore the coastline. It serves as protection against flooding. But the price of sand is rising, while market supply is decreasing due to increased demand in construction and other industries.
