Seasonal phenomenon: why hair falls out more intensively in autumn
In autumn, most people experience increased hair loss. While normally a person loses about 100 hairs daily, in October-November this number increases significantly. Valery Litvinov, PhD in Medical Sciences, explained to "Gazeta.Ru" that this phenomenon is associated with the reduction in daylight hours, hormonal changes, and the consequences of summer stress on the body.
The expert notes that during the summer period with prolonged daylight, the body produces more serotonin and vitamin D, which stimulate hair growth. With the onset of autumn, their levels drop, and the pineal gland begins to produce melatonin more intensively. This hormone puts a significant portion of hair follicles into a resting state, and after 2-3 months, a mechanism of increased hair loss is triggered.
"Therefore, the peak of seasonal hair loss occurs in October-November, although it starts in August-September. This is a natural renewal, not a cause for concern," Litvinov emphasized.
External factors also influence the process. Summer heat, excessive ultraviolet radiation, and emotional stress create a strain on the body, and autumn hair loss is often a delayed reaction. Excessive exposure to sunlight provokes oxidative stress on the scalp and damages hair follicle cells.
It's quite simple to distinguish normal physiological hair loss from pathological. A slight increase in the amount of hair on the comb or after washing your head is within normal limits. Warning signs should be hair falling out in clumps, the formation of bald spots, or a noticeable decrease in hair density – in these cases, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
The scientist also emphasized that seasonal hair loss has evolutionary roots. In animals, molting helped adaptation to seasonal changes, and in humans, this mechanism has been preserved in a rudimentary form.
To minimize losses, Litvinov recommends maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding stressful situations, and properly caring for your hair. Cosmetic procedures, including mesotherapy, can be effective for existing problems with hair density, however, in most cases, autumn hair loss does not require special intervention.
