The Sun ejected one of the largest prominences in recent years

On Wednesday, the Sun demonstrated an impressive cosmic spectacle, ejecting one of the most massive prominences in recent years. According to preliminary assessments by specialists, the colossal solar mass will pass by our planet. This information was disseminated by representatives of the solar astronomy laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to researchers' data, the grandiose ejection was recorded on the morning of August 20 near the southern pole of our star. Scientists from the laboratory emphasized the truly cosmic scale of the phenomenon — at a certain moment, the ejected solar mass exceeded the size of the star itself.

"Over the next couple of hours, a 'fiery' rain of hot matter remnants that failed to overcome gravity will still fall onto the Sun's surface at this location, but the main mass of the ejection has permanently left the Sun's atmosphere," the scientists reported.
