Astronomers raise alarm: a potentially dangerous asteroid is moving towards Earth. NASA has revised the probability of collision with space object 2024 YR4, which has a diameter of 90 meters.
The alarming message came from renowned volcanologist and science journalist Robin George Andrews, who warned of the impending threat through social media. The specialist emphasized the critical lack of time to develop protective measures.
The situation is complicated by the fact that creating an effective protection system against such space threats requires at least a decade, while a possible collision could occur in just eight years.
Despite the recent success of the asteroid trajectory modification mission, the case with 2024 YR4 could prove significantly more challenging. Specialists point out the structural peculiarity of many asteroids, which are not monolithic bodies but rather collections of loosely connected debris. Any attempt to impact such an object risks causing it to break apart into multiple dangerous fragments.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the asteroid will soon move out of the visibility zone of Earth's telescopes and will only return to view after several years. This significantly complicates the process of observation and analysis.
The scientific community is considering various countermeasures, including the use of advanced spacecraft and even nuclear weapons. However, each of the proposed methods requires careful study and assessment of associated risks.
