Prolonged cough may signal lung cancer: what to look out for

Specialists from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) are warning about a concerning symptom that shouldn't be ignored, reports TUT.AZ with reference to the Daily Mirror.

A cough that persists for more than three weeks, although usually caused by common illnesses like colds, flu, or COVID-19, can in some cases indicate the development of cancer. Particularly alarming accompanying signs include frequent respiratory infections, blood in sputum, painful breathing, chronic shortness of breath, increased fatigue, decreased appetite, and unexplained weight loss.

British doctors also draw attention to less obvious symptoms: changes in finger shape, voice hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, wheezing when breathing, and swelling in the face and neck area.

Doctors remind that the main risk factor for developing lung cancer remains tobacco smoking, which accounts for over 70% of all cases of the disease. Significant factors also include exposure to radon, asbestos, and coal fumes.
