Hot showers may cause baldness, warns British expert
Renowned British trichologist and hair transplant specialist Wajid Ali Anwar has issued a worrying warning: excessively hot water during showers can lead to a serious problem - hair loss, reports the Daily Star.
The expert explains that water that's too hot negatively affects the scalp, destroying its natural protective barrier and leaving hair dry and brittle.
"Water that's too hot can cause inflammation of the scalp, strip it of natural oils and make the hair cuticle rough. When the protective barrier is disrupted and the hair shafts are dehydrated, they become brittle, and temporary hair loss occurs - the very 'sudden baldness' that patients often talk about," the doctor explained.
According to the specialist, people who already have a tendency toward thinning hair are at particular risk when exposed to hot water.
Anwar recommends maintaining an optimal water temperature in the range of 37 to 39 degrees. A simple way to check: if the water causes a burning sensation when it contacts the inside of your wrist, it's a sign that it's too hot for your scalp.
Additionally, the doctor advises limiting shower time to five minutes, preferably in the evening:
"This way you'll wash away sweat, dirt, and cosmetic product residue before bedtime, reducing irritation to hair follicles. And if you exercise in the morning - choose cool water and avoid aggressive scalp massage," the specialist added.
