Millions of people around the world are getting distorted blood pressure readings — and the culprits are mundane habits: talking, crossed legs, and improper posture during measurement. This warning was issued by Dr. CM Fayaz, MD, a general practitioner, in a comment for the Times of India.
According to the specialist, one of the most common mistakes is talking during the procedure. Equally deceptive are crossed legs and a tense posture. Under such conditions, readings can deviate from actual values by 10–15 points — both higher and lower.
Fayaz also drew attention to the technical side of measurements. A key role is played by the correct size of the blood pressure monitor cuff: one that is too narrow or too wide can seriously distort the result. The doctor also called measuring blood pressure immediately after a cup of coffee, physical activity, or without prior rest a serious mistake.
To obtain accurate readings, the physician advises performing the procedure in a calm environment. Before measuring, one should sit for a few minutes, lean back against the chair, and place both feet flat on the floor without crossing them.
The optimal approach, according to the specialist's recommendation, is to check blood pressure twice a day, taking three consecutive measurements and recording the average value.
Fayaz reminded that arterial hypertension is not called the "silent killer" for nothing: the condition can persist for a long time without any noticeable symptoms. In this regard, he strongly recommends measuring blood pressure at least once every six months and seeking medical attention immediately if the upper readings regularly exceed 140 millimeters of mercury.
