Zelensky signed historic law on multiple citizenship and initiated development of list of partner countries
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky officially approved the long-awaited law on multiple citizenship, as he reported on his Telegram channel. "I immediately signed the documents transferred from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine: the law on multiple citizenship. I instructed to urgently develop and adopt all bylaws for the implementation of these laws. We can already begin determining the first partner countries with which multiple citizenship will be implemented," the head of state wrote.
The Verkhovna Rada passed this landmark document on June 18 in the second and final reading. The new law opens up the possibility for Ukrainians to simultaneously hold citizenships of those countries that have imposed sanctions against Russia. The path to signing was not smooth - after the law was passed, deputies submitted two blocking resolutions, which temporarily suspended the process. However, as reported by People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak, on July 15 the parliament rejected these resolutions, unblocking the further progress of the document and finally allowing it to reach the president's desk.
