US temporarily lifts sanctions on Syria for six months to ensure basic needs of the population
The US State Department has officially announced the suspension of the sanctions regime against Syria for 180 days. The corresponding statement was made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"In accordance with the president's promise to ease sanctions in Syria, I have issued a 180-day exemption from mandatory sanctions. These exemptions will help provide electricity, water and sanitation, and allow more effective humanitarian aid delivery throughout Syria," the State Department's official document states.
