Caspian Sea on the brink of ecological disaster: President of Kazakhstan raises alarm at SCO summit

"The deplorable situation around the Caspian Sea. The situation is approaching an ecological catastrophe," said the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, as reported by the press service of the head of the republic on Telegram channel.

The head of state drew the attention of SCO participants to this acute problem and proposed an initiative to create a Center for Water Problems Analysis in Astana under the auspices of the organization for continuous monitoring of the situation with the Caspian Sea.

In addition, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced a regional environmental summit in Astana in April 2026 in partnership with the UN and reminded about the 25th anniversary that the SCO will celebrate next year.

On July 22, a representative of the Volga-Caspian branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries reported that the water level in the Caspian Sea had dropped to a record low. According to the specialist, it was less than -29 meters according to the Baltic height system.

The expert explained that the sea level began to decline intensively after 2020. In the period from 2022 to 2023, the water level fell by 29 centimeters. This is primarily influenced by the active consumption of water from rivers flowing into the Caspian, as well as intensive water evaporation due to increased greenhouse gas emissions and rising temperatures.
