Media: Iran proposed an interim agreement to the US

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed an interim agreement on the nuclear program during negotiations with US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Witkoff.

As reported by TUT.AZ, the Axios portal, citing informed sources, revealed details of the diplomatic consultations.

According to the information received, during the meeting in Rome, Araghchi expressed doubts about the possibility of reaching a final agreement on the Iranian nuclear program within the 60-day period specified by US President Donald Trump. The Iranian minister emphasized that the technical aspects of a potential agreement require longer discussion. In response, Witkoff stated his unwillingness to consider interim options at this stage, prioritizing work on a comprehensive deal within the established timeframe.

However, according to the portal's sources, the American special envoy did not rule out the possibility of returning to the idea of an interim agreement if, as the deadline approaches, it becomes obvious that significantly more time is needed. However, the Iranian mission to the UN categorically denied the information published by Axios, calling it "simply untrue." The US State Department refrained from commenting on this issue.

On April 19, the second round of indirect negotiations between representatives of Iran and the US took place in the Italian capital, with Oman acting as a mediator. Following the meeting, Araghchi noted progress in reaching mutual understanding on a number of issues. The next round of negotiations between the Iranian Foreign Minister and the US Presidential Special Envoy is scheduled for April 26.
