Briton became a victim of a scammer, believing he was communicating with Jennifer Aniston
Southampton resident Paul Davis, a devoted fan of the cult series "Friends," was deceived by a criminal who skillfully masqueraded as famous actress Jennifer Aniston. As it was later revealed, the scammer used deepfake technologies to convince the trusting Briton to transfer money, reports Mirror.
According to Paul, he was absolutely convinced of the authenticity of his correspondence with the Hollywood star, who in messages even confessed her feelings for him. At a certain point, "Jennifer" informed him about an urgent need for £200 to pay for Apple subscriptions. To confirm their identity, the scammer sent Davis a photo of a driver's license and a video recording that seemed so realistic to the Briton that he transferred the requested amount without hesitation.
The criminal impersonating Aniston also strongly urged Paul not to spread information about the money transfer on social media. After receiving the funds, the "actress's" account blocked the Briton. Paul emphasized that this incident caused serious damage to his mental state. Now he has decided to share his story to warn others about the dangers associated with deepfake technologies.
