Pacific giant awakens: underwater volcano Axial Seamount prepares for a new eruption. Located 500 kilometers off the Oregon coast at a colossal depth of almost 1.5 kilometers below the ocean surface, this underwater giant is showing clear signs of activity, reports Daily Mail.

Scientists from the University of Washington and Oregon State University have recorded a disturbing phenomenon - the seafloor in the volcano area has begun to noticeably rise, which clearly indicates the accumulation of magma in its depths. Similar deformations were observed on the eve of the powerful 2015 eruption, when Axial Seamount triggered a series of eight thousand underground tremors and formed a grandiose lava field reaching a thickness of 120 meters.

Current indicators of seafloor uplift have already reached threshold values comparable to those that preceded the last awakening of the volcano. Seismic activity also shows a sharp surge - on some days measuring instruments record more than 500 earthquakes, indicating growing pressure in the depths of the underwater giant.

Over the past thirty years, Axial Seamount has demonstrated its volcanic power at least three times - in 1998, 2011, and 2015. This volcano is a large-scale underwater shield with gentle slopes and is characterized by a relatively calm type of eruption, emitting not explosive pyroclastic flows, but evenly spreading lava.

Despite the alarming indicators, specialists assure: the volcano poses no threat to the population. Its significant distance from the shore and impressive depth completely exclude any impact on coastal territories. However, for the scientific world, the upcoming eruption will provide a unique chance to observe this majestic natural phenomenon in real time thanks to the deployed network of underwater sensors and modern telemetry systems.
