Breakthrough in neurotechnology: Neuralink implants chip in ALS patient for the first time in history
Elon Musk announced in his X account about a new achievement of Neuralink company — the installation of a brain implant in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Bradford Smith from Arizona became the third person in the world to receive a Neuralink chip, and the first patient diagnosed with ALS. Despite being almost completely paralyzed, thanks to revolutionary technology Smith can now type text on a computer, which is converted into speech.
"I am the first chipped person in the world with ALS. And the first non-speaking one," Smith shared on social network X. Neuralink CEO Elon Musk actively supported the patient, inviting users to ask him questions directly.
In his messages, Bradford Smith admits that life with a severe illness is not easy, but he is glad that "everything is good now." With the help of the neuroimplant, he described his condition: his body is almost completely paralyzed, with only the corners of his mouth and eyes retaining mobility. The man's life is supported by a mechanical ventilator.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is an incurable degenerative disease of the central nervous system that affects motor neurons. ALS belongs to the category of rare diseases.
