Austria contemplates farewell to neutrality: Foreign Minister speaks about possible NATO membership

"It is obvious that neutrality by itself cannot ensure our security," stated Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in an interview with the German publication Die Welt.

She cited growing global instability as the reason for such a serious reconsideration of the country's long-standing policy.

"Austria's protection can be guaranteed by investments in defense and strengthening partnerships," emphasized Meinl-Reisinger.

She noted that discussion on this issue could be productive, despite the current lack of parliamentary and public consensus regarding NATO membership.

Recall that Austria adopted the status of permanent neutrality in 1955, and this principle is enshrined in the country's Constitution. However, the country regularly participates in cooperation programs with the alliance.
