Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, has become the first Pope from the United States. He was not among the favorites whose candidacies were considered likely ahead of the conclave to elect a new pontiff of the Catholic Church. And for many, he still remains a "dark horse." Here are 10 things to know about Robert Prevost, who is currently Pope Leo XIV.
Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old Chicago native, has established himself as a leader with extensive global experience. He devoted a significant part of his spiritual career to missionary work in South America, and in the recent past, he headed the influential Vatican office for bishop appointments. According to CNN, his election symbolizes continuity with the legacy of the late Pope Francis. The new pontiff is expected to continue the church reforms initiated by his predecessor, as well as strengthen the fight against poverty and support for marginalized populations.
Here's what else is worth knowing about the new American pontiff:
1. He was the "least American" of the American cardinals
Prevost was born in Chicago. However, in the Vatican, where he subsequently lived and worked, he was considered the "least American" among the U.S. cardinals. Lamb, who personally knew the new Pope Leo XIV since his time as a cardinal, characterizes him as "an extremely thoughtful and measured person." Overall, he gave the impression of a reserved personality.
3. He is a member of the Augustinian Order
Pope Leo is a member of the world-renowned religious Order of Augustinians. For more than ten years, he led this order as its prior.
In his first speeches, the new pontiff emphasized that he is a son of St. Augustine, and quoted the famous saying of this saint: "For you I am a bishop, with you, after all, I am a Christian." This phrase reflects the profound idea that all members of the church hierarchy – from top leaders to ordinary parishioners – walk a common path.
4. He has extensive leadership experience
Pope Francis entrusted Prevost with the position of prefect of the ep
