Untreated heartburn can lead to cancer: oncologists warning
# Heartburn Can Lead to Cancer: Oncologist Names Hidden Threat of Common Ailment

Brazilian oncologist Renata D'Alpino has warned about the serious danger of chronic heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux — these common conditions can trigger precancerous changes in the esophagus. The doctor discussed the hidden risks of this familiar ailment with the Terra portal.

As reported by TUT.AZ, heartburn manifests as a burning pain behind the breastbone, often accompanied by sour or bitter regurgitation. Symptoms usually worsen after eating, when bending over, or while lying down. According to the specialist, gastroesophageal reflux disease is most often behind these sensations — a condition in which stomach contents regularly flow back into the esophagus.

The mechanism of damage is simple and dangerous: stomach acid erodes the esophageal lining, causing inflammation and injuring tissues. Years without treatment threaten chronic esophagitis and other complications. In some cases, persistent inflammation triggers mutations in the mucosal cells.

Barrett's esophagus causes particular concern among doctors — a condition in which the normal epithelium of the lower esophagus transforms into atypical columnar cells. Dr. D'Alpino emphasized: this pathology increases the risk of cancer development by more than 20 times.

At the same time, the oncologist noted: cancer is not an inevitable outcome for everyone suffering from heartburn. However, symptoms should not be ignored. With regular chest burning and signs of reflux, it is necessary to consult a doctor and undergo examination — this will help prevent dangerous complications.
