The longest word in the English language has been named: three hours to read

The longest word in the English language contains nearly 190 thousand letters, yet pronouncing it in real life is virtually impossible. This is the conclusion reached by linguist Laurel MacKenzie from New York University.

As reported by TUT.AZ citing RIA Novosti, the mysterious giant is the chemical name of the largest known protein molecule. The length of the term staggers the imagination: 189,819 characters! To pronounce it in its entirety out loud would require more than three hours of continuous speech.

Laurel MacKenzie admits that coming up with a situation in which someone would actually use this word — whether in conversation or in a scientific paper — is extremely difficult. In the expert's opinion, such a cumbersome construction is much closer to an extended chemical formula than to a conventional linguistic unit.

The scholar emphasized that the very question — whether such constructions can be considered full-fledged words — remains open and sparks debate within the linguistic community. The answer largely depends on the chosen criteria: whether frequency of use, practical necessity, or actual function in living language is taken into account.

Interestingly, in modern science there is still no separate discipline that officially deals with searching for and registering the longest words. Nevertheless, such linguistic curiosities invariably attract the attention of lexicographers and researchers who compile dictionaries.

In MacKenzie's view, the hunt for record-breaking words is above all a fascinating intellectual exercise that helps to better understand the possibilities and boundaries of the language system, but is unlikely ever to find practical application in everyday communication.
