Gel polish remains one of the most in-demand cosmetic products due to its durability, but specialists warn: its long-term and regular use may create potential risks for women's reproductive health.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to the Turkish portal Habertürk, obstetrician-gynecologist and reproductive medicine specialist Nur Dokuzeyül Günger noted that many gel polishes contain substances that can affect the hormonal system.
According to the expert, such products often contain phthalates - components that provide elasticity and durability of the coating. These substances are classified as endocrine disruptors and in experimental animal studies have been linked to a decrease in ovarian reserve, ovulation disorders, and negative effects on embryo development. Another component - toluene, which ensures even application - can affect the menstrual cycle and hormonal balance with prolonged exposure.
Formaldehyde, which acts as a hardener, also raises concerns: WHO classifies it as a carcinogen, and high levels of exposure, according to some studies, can negatively affect ovarian function. Additionally, the effect of methacrylates used in the polymerization of the coating under UV or LED lamps is being discussed. Despite limited penetration through the skin, the possible accumulation of these compounds in the body with frequent use remains a subject of scientific discussion.
However, Günger emphasized that there is no direct evidence yet that gel polish causes infertility. Nevertheless, observations of women from high occupational exposure groups - beauty industry employees and medical specialists - showed an increased frequency of menstrual cycle disorders, decreased ovarian reserve, and signs of early menopause. This suggests that the main risk factor is many years of regular exposure to chemicals.
According to the doctor, special caution should be exercised by women planning pregnancy or undergoing infertility treatment: during such periods, the effects of endocrine disruptors may be more pronounced. The expert advises reducing chemical exposure several months before conception, carefully studying the composition of cosmetics, and ensuring good ventilation during procedures.
However, there are no grounds to completely abandon gel polish. The specialist recommends moderation: rare use of quality products, extending the intervals between procedures, and considering individual health factors help minimize potential risks to the reproductive system.
