Revolutionary approach to treatment: liver transplantation after immunotherapy significantly increases survival of patients with advanced cancer
As reported by TUT.AZ, a large-scale study by Cedars-Sinai Cancer specialists, covering more than 4.3 thousand patients, revealed striking results in the fight against advanced liver cancer. The scientific work, published in the authoritative journal Liver Cancer, changes the understanding of the possibilities of modern oncology.
Scientists have found that while immunotherapy effectively reduces tumor size, it rarely leads to complete cure. However, subsequent liver transplantation or surgical removal of the tumor after a course of immunotherapy reduces the risk of mortality by an impressive 85% compared to patients receiving only immunotherapy treatment.
Despite the enormous advantages of such a combined approach, researchers note with alarm that only about 3% of patients after immunotherapy are referred for surgical interventions, predominantly in large academic medical centers. The lead author of the study, Dr. Ju Dong Yang, emphasizes that this is a missed opportunity to save lives: many patients die not because of the tumor itself, but due to concomitant liver diseases that could have been eliminated by timely transplantation.
