The ban on women visiting the island has roots in deep antiquity and is connected to religious beliefs. According to tradition, female presence could defile the spiritual purity of the sanctuary. Male pilgrims follow a strict ritual code: before stepping on the sacred land, they must perform a purifying ablution in the sea waters. Visitors are strictly forbidden from taking anything from the island or disclosing what they have seen there.

Okinoshima is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. On its territory are ancient shrines dedicated to the sea deity, to whom sailors and fishermen have appealed for centuries with prayers for protection during voyages and bountiful catches. Today, this mysterious island receives no more than a few dozen guests annually, predominantly clergy. Thanks to the strictest visitation rules, deep spiritual significance, and rich historical heritage, Okinoshima remains one of the most inaccessible and mysterious places on Earth.
