Underwater giant awakens: scientists predict eruption of Axial Seamount volcano in 2025. One of the world's most active underwater volcanoes, located at a depth of almost a kilometer and 1100 km off the coast of San Francisco, is preparing for a new fiery performance. This is reported by the Los Angeles Times (LAT).
Axial Seamount, discovered by scientists only in the 1980s, has already demonstrated its power three times - in 1998, 2011, and 2015. However, residents of coastal areas of the United States have nothing to worry about: this marine giant erupts smoothly, without dramatic explosions, similar to its "relatives" in Hawaii or Iceland, and does not provoke destructive tsunamis.
Thanks to a network of high-tech underwater sensors, researchers are recording alarming signs - a characteristic "bulging" of the seafloor, which is a classic harbinger of an impending eruption. Similar deformations were observed before previous activations of the volcano, including the successfully predicted 2015 eruption, which was forecast by scientists Chadwick and Scott Nooner.
Although it's difficult to name the exact "X" day, the scientific community agrees that a new fiery show may unfold by the end of 2025. At the moment, seismic activity underwater remains moderate, however, the relentless accumulation of pressure continues.
Axial Seamount occupies a unique position in the zone of diverging tectonic plates, directly above a hot magmatic spot - an ideal combination for regular eruptions. This turns it into an invaluable natural "laboratory" for studying the predictability of volcanic activity.
Unlike its land-based counterparts, experiments with predicting the activity of this underwater giant pose no threat to the population. At the same time, as specialists emphasize, success in predicting the behavior of Axial Seamount could be the key to more accurate forecasting of dangerous land volcano eruptions in the future.
