Syrian Foreign Minister raised a new flag at the UN headquarters

A ceremony of raising the new flag of Syria took place at the UN headquarters in New York, attended by the Foreign Minister of the Syrian transitional government, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani.

This is reported by TUT.AZ with reference to TASS.

The significant event in front of the world organization's building gathered several dozen diplomats, UN staff, and media representatives. Nearby, dozens of supporters of the new Syrian authorities gathered, enthusiastically greeting the raising of the green-white-black banner with three red stars - a symbol that the Syrian opposition has used since 2011.

Al-Shibani is expected to speak later at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria.

In late November 2024, armed opposition formations began a large-scale offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, they entered Damascus, Bashar Assad left the presidency and fled the country. The de facto leader of Syria became the head of the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" group, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, known by the nickname Abu Mohammed al-Jolani. On January 29, 2025, he declared himself acting president for a transition period, which, according to him, could last from four to five years.
