30-year-old nurse sentenced to life imprisonment for killing newborns in a Spanish hospital
As reported by TUT.AZ, according to El Pais.
The court found Brenda Aguero guilty of deliberately administering lethal doses of potassium and insulin to healthy infants in the neonatal unit of a Cordoba hospital. The tragic events unfolded from March to June 2022, when five newborns died and eight were on the brink of death.
Initially, the deaths of the children were attributed to accidents. Suspicions only arose after two infants died on the same day, which prompted doctors to contact law enforcement. Autopsies revealed a shocking pattern – all children died from cardiac arrest caused by critical levels of potassium in their bodies.
The investigation established that Aguero, using her official position, took infants from their mothers under various pretexts and administered lethal injections. Her presence at the time of all incidents was confirmed by both witness testimonies from relatives of the deceased and hospital duty logs.
According to the prosecution, the nurse deliberately chose healthy newborns who were under less close observation by staff. After ten hours of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict. Aguero herself did not admit guilt, and in her final statement accused the mothers of the deceased children "of playing according to a script."
In addition to the main defendant, the court sentenced four hospital managers and representatives of the regional Ministry of Health to imprisonment for terms of four to five years for concealing the crimes.
